Subaru has announced a motorsport specific version of its legendary STI. The WRX STI NR4 Spec could be yours for $38,000, as long as you don’t plan on registering it.

The NR4-specification Scooby must have an FIA-approved roll-cage f and prepped for motorsport, it cannot be used (legally) on the road. The car is equipped with a development of the JDM-spec 2.0-litre STI engine, a formula that has had rallying success over three decades of use.

“Current production WRX and WRX STI have taken interest in these turbocharged legends back to the peak levels we saw in the late 1990s, and with that has come a whole new wave of interest in using them for motorsport activities,” said Nick Senior, Subaru Australia Managing Director.

“These cars represent fantastic value for motorsport enthusiasts that want the amazing All-Wheel Drive advantage that has made WRX such a legend over the past 20 plus years.”

Subaru’s long-term motorsport affiliate, Possum Bourne Motor Sport is developing various packages for the NR4, which will be designed to suit a wide range of drivers.

A choice of white or the nostalgic WR blue will be available. Once the customer has chosen various options, the car can be ready to race in categories all the way up to WRC2, straight out of the box.
