Ex-Formula One star (and now Porsche sports car driver) Mark Webber has marked the Australian debut of the Porsche 918 Spyder with some quick laps of the Albert Park circuit, as part of the weekend’s Formula One festivities.

A series of high-speed demonstration laps had Webber shifting the Porsche 918 Spyder through its various drive modes, from stealthy ‘E-Power’ full-electric through to the flat-out ‘Race Hybrid’ mode that draws full power from the combined electric and combustion drivetrain. Webber had the 657kW Porsche 918 Spyder up to a reported 260km/h on the flowing 5.3km circuit, with comedic star Eric Bana in the passenger seat.

Bana, a keen Porsche enthusiast and racer, was then shifted into the driver’s seat to be among the first Australians to experience the Porsche 918 Spyder on the race track.

“It was fantastic to be able to showcase the 918 Spyder to the Australian public,” said Webber. “It is an awesome car with its combination of electric and combustion engine power sources, and when they work in tandem the driving experience on track is pure race car.”

The 918 Spyder starred at Porsche Cars Australia’s E-Mobility display at the circuit, sitting alongside the 919 hybrid LMP1 car that Webber drove in the 2014 World Endurance Championship. A plug-in Panamera S E-Hybrid and new plug-in Cayenne S E-Hybrid completed the stunning display.

With all 918 examples already spoken for, the Porsche 918 Spyder is destined to become a pioneering classic.
